MarketWatch Picks Homepage Redesign

Project Overview

I led the UX Strategy and Architecture for the homepage redesign of MarketWatch’s new product offering, MarketWatch Picks, which provides expert opinions to help users make informed financial decisions for retirement, investing, and everyday purchases. This project aimed to improve brand identity, reduce bounce rates, and increase the article click-through rate.


Challenge

MarketWatch Picks had a soft launch on the MarketWatch website, and despite gaining momentum through organic SEO traffic, it needed a revamped homepage to truly capitalize on its growing user base and better compete with CNBC, CNN, and Forbes.

Purpose

The primary goals of the homepage redesign were to:

  • Establish a clear and strong brand identity.
  • Reduce the bounce rate of new visitors.
  • Increase article click-through rates (CTR).

Scope

MarketWatch attracts over 100 million page views monthly, and with MW Picks gaining traction, the homepage redesign was a crucial step in positioning Picks as a long-term product within MarketWatch.

Competitive & Heuristic Analysis

Through an in-depth competitive analysis, we compared MarketWatch Picks with major competitors like CNBC, CNN, and Forbes. Key takeaways:

  • Brand Identity: Balancing differentiation from MarketWatch while maintaining familiarity.
  • Navigation: Optimizing user flows by refining how users navigated between MarketWatch and Picks.
  • Carousel Integration: Unique horizontal browsing experience not used by competitors, allowing easy article discovery.

Heuristic analysis revealed three critical areas to address:

  1. Aesthetic Simplicity: The old homepage was cluttered, leading to high bounce rates.
  2. Clear Information Architecture: Streamlined navigation and content hierarchy to reduce user confusion.
  3. Trust & Engagement: Enhancing product cards and widgets to improve clarity and engagement.

Content Massing & User Flow

We focused on optimizing content placement and structuring the user journey across different traffic sources:

  • Organic SEO: A primary driver of traffic to the Picks homepage.
  • Internal Navigation: Positioning Picks in the main MarketWatch navigation for better visibility.
  • Article Pages: Ensuring users naturally flowed from individual articles to the broader Picks content.

Wireframes & Design Concepts

I led the design process, creating wireframes to address the identified issues:

  • Simplicity: Simplified the layout and removed clutter.
  • Brand Identity: Established a modern, differentiated design while maintaining a link to MarketWatch.
