Overview
MarketWatch is a leading international financial news company, attracting over 16 million unique monthly visitors. However, their website was underperforming in key metrics, including user engagement, session duration, and conversions. I led a cross-functional team to revamp the homepage with the objective of increasing engagement, improving the user experience, and driving conversions by creating a more modern, scalable, and marketing-driven design.
Current Challenges
The existing MarketWatch homepage had too much information crammed into a limited space, resulting in low user engagement. The lack of focus on key value propositions also hampered the website’s ability to convert casual readers into loyal users. Our analytics revealed that the bounce rate was hovering at 72%, and the average session duration was less than 2 minutes.
Goals for the Redesign
1. Boost Key Performance Metrics
We aimed to decrease the bounce rate by 30%, increase the average session duration to over 3 minutes, and raise article click-through rates by 15%.
2. Showcase Market Data More Effectively
MarketWatch is known for its in-depth financial market data. We needed to highlight this as a competitive differentiator without overwhelming users.
3. Establish Content Hierarchy for Conversion Optimization
By organizing content more effectively, we aimed to guide users through the site, promoting high-value actions like newsletter signups, article sharing, and deeper content exploration.
4. Improve the Aesthetic and Branding
A modern, clean design is not just a UX necessity—it’s also a critical part of improving public perception. We wanted users to perceive MarketWatch as the go-to source for financial insights while subtly guiding them toward conversion points.
Marketing Strategy and Execution
1. Content Audit for SEO & CRO
Our team began with a full content audit, optimizing existing articles for SEO and conversions (CRO). We updated over 100 articles to include more targeted keywords, improving organic search visibility by 20%. We also included clear calls to action, such as “subscribe” or “share,” on every high-traffic article.
2. User Journey and Funnel Optimization
We mapped out key user journeys based on the site’s visitor data. Using heatmaps and analytics tools, we identified the high-traffic zones on the homepage. To drive conversions, we reorganized the page to feature trending market data and editor-curated stories, which increased click-through rates by 22% within the first two months of the relaunch.
3. A/B Testing and Personalization
We conducted A/B testing to determine the most effective layout for promoting user engagement. Testing revealed that reducing the number of articles above the fold by 40% significantly improved page interaction. We also personalized content for returning users, featuring recommended articles based on their reading history, which boosted return visits by 18%.
Marketing KPIs Achieved
- Bounce Rate Decreased: Reduced by 25%, from 72% to 54%, after the new homepage launch.
- Session Duration Increased: Average session duration rose from 1:52 minutes to 3:17 minutes, surpassing our initial goal.
- Click-Through Rate (CTR) Growth: Article CTR improved by 19% across all content categories, driving more readers to deeper site sections.
- Organic Traffic Increase: SEO optimization efforts resulted in a 15% boost in organic traffic over three months.
- Newsletter Signups: By strategically placing CTAs in high-visibility areas, newsletter signups increased by 12%, adding over 5,000 new subscribers in the first month.
Key Improvements to the Home Page
1. Improved Market Data Section
We reorganized the market data section to make it more visually appealing and easier to digest, leading to a 15% increase in engagement with financial tools and tickers.
2. Optimized Ad Placement
Switching the ad placement and restructuring the page layout led to a 10% increase in ad click-through rates, without compromising user experience.
3. Personalization and Right Rail Usage
By utilizing the right rail for personalized content such as recently viewed tickers and articles, we increased return visits by 18% and user engagement with personalized content by 25%.
Outcome
The redesign exceeded expectations. We saw substantial improvements across all KPIs, with a notable increase in user engagement, organic traffic, and overall site conversions. By refining the layout and focusing on data-driven decision-making, we not only improved the aesthetic but also made MarketWatch more competitive in a crowded financial news space.
